Zero Audio/Video Interference with a secure private connection

Review Date: April 23, 2008

My wife and I tried the SUMMER INFANT HAND HELD COLOR VIDEO MONITOR 2.5 inch Screen - 02100A earlier this year. Unfortunately, both channels on that device had significant audio and video interference. Depending on which way we held the receiver, we could see 3 other babies in the neighborhood. We were not comfortable with the fact that others would be able to look in our baby so we returned that model.

This item advertises zero interference and I'm happy to say this is very true. We are able to leave the monitor on at night and do not have to listen to the hum and static we experienced with the first monitor. We're also able to receive a very good audio/video signal over a block away from our house. We have 802.11B and 802.11G wireless networks as well as 2.4GHz cordless phones in the house .... none of which have been affected by the addition of this new wireless device. It also advertises a secure and private connection which appears to be the case as the camera and video monitor were synchronized at the factory.

The video quality on this unit is comparable to the 2100A model we tried, just on a slightly smaller screen. It's not TV broadcast or camcorder quality, but you can easily see what's going on. The color video on the monitor is a bit washed out. I can pick out some colors, but it's not much more than a black and white video. The infrared night vision is really cool! It produces a black and white image, but you can see details clear as day.

We haven't hooked up the crib soother yet. It's designed to attach with a type of clamp that doesn't easily fit the curved edges of our crib, but I think I can still make it work.
Much better than audio alone

Update 7/14: I had to return this item as all of the sudden the monitor would lose connection multiple times during the night and would emit a loud buzzing noise as it tried to reconnect. In addition, you couldn't add a secondary camera to the unit, eventhough the remote had the option for 2 cameras. I wish it would have worked better.

I was on the fence as to whether or not to buy a video unit. I chose this one as it was "secure" and promised no interference from my wireless phones/router.

In terms of audio, the unit is far more sensitive than both the Fisher Price and Uniden monitors I have owned in the past.

Video wise, I am very happy. During the day, the picture is in full color and very clear. Night time uses night vision. I was very surprised by how clear the picture was. We are very happy with this purchase. My only question is that I dont think you can add onto the unit (ie add another receiver). The receiver has a switch for a 2nd camera, but I do not see one for sale.

I have yet to use the Crib Soother, but can see that being very handy when the time comes.
Worked as advertised for me

I was nervous about getting this because there were only 10 reviews that seemed to be evenly split between working great and having problems. However, since it was a known brand and digital (I really didn't like the idea of unsecured images of my infant being broadcast) I thought I'd give it a shot. We received our unit a few days ago, set-up was easy, there were no pairing issues, and the audio and video quality is as I expected. I really don't need and likely will not use the crib soother because I already had a crib soother from my older child that works just fine, but the soother does work on the crib and via the reciever.
Great Monitor

I searched high and low for a good monitor for our newborn. I'm an engineering type who was very discouraged by the poor reviews of previous products and was glad I waited until this was released. Our house has two wireless networks (802.11b and g), a microwave and a slew of other wireless techno-gadgets.

We have experienced nothing but a clear image and clear sound. The build quality is solid. The crib soother is pretty cool, but we really don't use it much.

In night-vision mode, the resolution on the screen is just good enough that I can make out facial expressions and see my baby's pacifier...which is good enough for me.

The only reason I did not give this item five stars is because it apparently needs LOTS of light to work in day (color) mode as I haven't yet seen that happen. It's really not important to me as the product's purpose is extremely well fulfilled.
Love this item

This video monitor was great with my little one. The soother was a waste of money because it was too bulky and it did not motions did not make her crib vibrate and my little one would just want to play with it.
Great Secure Video Monitor

Product is very well made. Small screen is large enough to see what needs to be seen. Audio levels are very good.

Only concern would be that it does interfere with my home WIFI (as opposed to other reviewers) since it is running at 2.4 GHz. Video/Audio remains super clear, however computer internet connections are compromised.

Baby Monitor

Overall, this monitor works really well and gets the job done. The picture quality is good, although it is black and white. It is easy to use and gives us the freedom to do household chores while keeping an eye on the baby. I did however just read the other reviews. We have a wireless router and have had our internet go in and out. We just switched to another internet provider hoping that would solve the problem not knowing it was the interference with the monitor. Great buy if you don't have a router!
Poor Camera Quality, Small Screen and too Bulky and Big

We have and love the non-digital 900 mhz Summer infant video montior. The problem is that it only had 2 channels with our old monitor so we were able view our child and our neighbor's. When we had baby#2, we wanted the ability to see both our own children so we needed to move to digital or another frequency and tried this one. To our disappointment, this one was way too bulky, the screen for viewing the baby was much too small, our old one was 2.5 and this one is 1.8 or 1.5. Also, the picture quality in this digital one wasn't as good as our old one for some reason.
On the up side, we didn't encounter any interference with any other monitors or other wireless devices so that was great.
We ended up getting the Safety 1st digital video monitor and it's great. There's no interference, the screen is also small however it has a super zoom in feature so that made up for the small screen.
keeps breaking

Reviewer: apb124,
I think I'm just going to return this monitor for good. I initially loved the monitor and the crib soother when my baby was younger, but now this monitor is more of a nuisance than helpful. The picture is ok...could definitely be better. But sometimes I try and turn on the montitor and it won't read the camera...then I have to go into the nursery to turn the camera on and off for the monitor to read the camera. This is obviously not a good thing when you have a baby who's trying to fall asleep. I have had to return the monitor a couple times because it broke and did not have any sound, or became exceptionally staticky. I had tried to contact Summer Infant once, but they were useless. I think the best point of this monitor is that you don't get any interference from other neighborhood monitors, but there are plenty other digital monitors on the market now, so I would definitely choose one of those over this one.
Inferior Product, read this review

We started with the "Baby's Quiet Sounds(tm) Color Handheld Video Monitor" made by Summer Infant. It's a fantastic product, well made and works great. The reason we bought the "Summer Infant 2.4 GHz Color Video Monitor with Crib Soother" was that the "Quiet Sounds" picks up other 900Mhz baby monitor video transmissions, so we could see our neighbors baby when our camera was shut off. And they could see our baby too.

This really bothered us, so we bought the "Summer Infant 2.4 GHz Color Video Monitor with Crib Soother" since it was digitally secure and no one could see what our camera was broadcasting.

However, the "Summer Infant 2.4 GHz Color Video Monitor with Crib Soother" is a totally inferior product in so many ways:

1. The build is totally cheap plastic, all button are cheap plastic and feel like they could break at any minute

2. The video screen is much smaller than "Baby's Quiet Sounds(tm) Color Handheld Video Monitor", and the actual picture is impossible to make our, very poor quality picture.

3. The night vision is sub-par when compared to the "Baby's Quiet Sounds(tm) Color Handheld Video Monitor". There are not enough LED's to see sufficiently at night. The "Baby's Quiet Sounds(tm) Color Handheld Video Monitor" has outstanding night vision.

In only benefit there is over the "Baby's Quiet Sounds(tm) Color Handheld Video Monitor" is the digital secure transmission, however, in our opinion, the product is unusable.

We wonder why they did not take the "Baby's Quiet Sounds(tm) Color Handheld Video Monitor" and make that digitally secure, and the only thing we can come up with is that the price point would have been to high.

So we used this product for one night, then packed it up and sent it back to Amazon for a refund, which they processed right away - Thank you Amazon!

You will not be happy with this product. You will be 100% satisfied with their other product, the "Baby's Quiet Sounds(tm) Color Handheld Video Monitor".
Great monitor - unless you have a wireless router

We purchased this digital monitor to avoid picking up all the other kids in the neighborhood. It works great--unless you want to use a wireless router at the same time. I called the manufacturer and they said they know some people are having an issue with wireless router interference but they didn't have a fix. They suggested we return the product.
Worst video monitor yet

We've had three video monitors in our possession. This monitor is the worst yet. We had to contact Summer three times to have it replaced due to problems. Customer Service has refused to give our money back and instead ships us a new monitor- it fails to work each time. I would not waste money on this monitor. Any other brand digital video monitor has to be better.
Poorly built system - don't waste your time or money!

I bought this baby monitor because it received mostly decent reviews here and at Babies 'R Us. However, this monitor was busted before it was fully unpacked! The screws that hold the power adapter together were stripped out of their holes the first time the adapter was removed from a socket. This wasn't a manufacturing defects, it was a design flaw. No matter how good the rest of the components may be, as a system this monitor is useless, so don't waste your time or money on it.

Ian
